Then She Found Me

Editorial Review

A hilarious and sometimes moving story about a woman in the midst of a unique mid-life crisis. Her world is turned upside down when, in quick succession, her husband leaves, her adoptive mother dies and her real one, an eccentric talk show host materialises. If this isn't enough trouble, she finds herself falling in love with the shy English guy at her work and to make matters worse, she's pregnant. She is a thoroughly modern woman in a thoroughly modern crisis and the only person who understands her is a mother that she has just met and who is quite frankly, really annoying.

Editorial Review

If a premise was going to induce menstruation in menfolk, it'd be that of Then She Found Me. Consider the ingredients – adoption, pregnancy, divorce, infidelity, sandals, Helen Hunt, Matthew Broderick, Colin Firth, Bette Midler as an Oprah-style talk show host. If you're a gentleman, you might now be experiencing some unusual cramping. Try to ignore it, or take some Ponstan if necessary, and then get along to see Then She Found Me.

Ten years ago, Helen Hunt was a massive star – in 1998 she won the Oscar, Emmy and Golden Globe for her work in As Good As It Gets and TV's Mad About You. Since then she's worked only occasionally but here, as if to make up for it, she directs, produces, co-writes and appears in just about every frame. And she does so boldly. She's unafraid to tap uncomfortable and unpleasant hypocrisies in April, trusting we'll still recognise her decency and humanity.

Similarly, she alone in the recent gossamer baby-boom movies has the guts to chart some of the real darkness that can go with pregnancy. And you'll be hard pressed to find another actress so willing to give herself repeated close-ups when she's clearly never been within coo-ee of Botox. As director, Hunt also wisely puts a cap on her supporting cast's tendency to overplay. It's this honesty that makes Then She Found Me a superior drama and ultimately very touching.
