Editorial Review
Direct from South Africa comes the most inspiring vocal group of recent times, the Soweto Gospel Choir, who were last in Australia in 2003. The choir has become a worldwide phenomenon, their celebratory music making fans out of Bono, Queen, Jimmy Cliff, Annie Lennox and Celine Dion. They have performed for Bill Clinton, for Nelson Mandela on numerous occasions, and have sung Happy Birthday to Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
On top of this they have picked up two Grammys for their most recent albums, winning best traditional world music award for 2007's Blessed, and again in 2008 for their latest release, African Spirit.
Sowento Gospel Choir are currently touring the world in support of African Spirit, including a long list of major and regional towns throughout Australia. From Bunbury to Albury, the choir is performing a rich repertoire of songs as diverse as the traditional gospel hymn Sefpano through to the stunning reworking of Bob Dylan's I'll Remember You.
Strong humanitarians, the Soweto Gospel Choir invite audiences to give to their charity Nkosi's Haven, a foundation that brings relief to AIDS orphans. So far Nkosi's Haven has raised more than US$1 million, helping feed, clothe and house 600 orphans.
